There was bird on daddy's shoulder
Kitty
She thinks she's a bird, she does
Daddy was on the phone
Camera captured a glazed look
A surprised look
A happy, surprised look
In their eyes
Kitty
Perched like a bird
Seeking a place to sit
Time is now gone, fleeted away
Kitty
Is too old
And too fat
To be the bird on daddy's shoulder
So daddy bugs me about school now
"I'll live forever," says he
"To make sure you finish college
Before you move to New Orleans
To read poetry in some cafe"
Kitty
Is older
She'll climb up high
Seeking the sky
Asking us why
And glare down at us
Laughing hysterically in a way
A kitty
Can laugh
And when it's no longer amusing
She's catch those sodding parakeets
Then be scolded
About eating family members.
