Survive

Has your spirit ever run out of energy
And stopped to sleep, to rest
Then has forgotten to get up again
And left you empty, left you lonely
Left you open to defeat
Have you ever accepted that defeat
And lost not only your spirit
But your meager bit of hope too
So all that's left is a shell
Unhappy, Untrusting, and Unloving
Unable to expect anything from life
Except the threatened disappointment
Has it ever seemed like it was too much
And you just couldn't accept it
Much less take it in
So you considered ending it all
Have you been down so long
You forgot what anything felt like
You forgot how hope feels
Been shocked when someone else
They breathed it over you
Did you withdraw into yourself
And find it hard to believe
That anyone would do that for you
So hard you thought it was a lie
That you pushed that hope away
The realized it was all that sustained you
And had that fluttering thought again
Of ending it all
Because going back to the hope would hurt
And you may have doomed yourself
So you do have the heart to push it
And you let yourself get stuck on survive
